U.S. Department of Energy Assistant Secretary Daniel Simmons to Keynote the 2019 ESA Storage Exchange

The Assistant Secretary Will Discuss DOE Energy Storage Priorities in Keynote Address Oct. 15

WASHINGTON, August 5, 2019The U.S. Energy Storage Association (ESA), the national trade association for companies that develop and deploy the energy storage technologies we rely on every day, announced that Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Daniel Simmons will deliver a keynote address on Tuesday, Oct. 15 to the attendees of 2019 ESA Storage Exchange – Powered by EPRI (formerly named the STUDIO Conference).

Simmons will provide opening keynote remarks on Tuesday afternoon and address the established priorities of the U.S. DOE’s EERE, which include the promotion of affordable and reliable energy to enhance America’s economic growth and energy security.

“As we integrate diverse energy sources such as variable wind and solar into the electric grid, flexibility of generation and consumption will be critical to ensuring a reliable and resilient grid,” said Assistant Secretary Simmons. “Energy storage technologies including hydropower, batteries and electric vehicles can create value and help balance our electric system. I look forward to participating in the ESA Storage Exchange and sharing some of our upcoming priorities.”

ESA invited Assistant Secretary Simmons to share his vision for a flexible grid future with developers, utilities, manufacturers, integrators and other industry experts. Prior to his confirmation by the U.S. Senate on January 2, 2019, Simmons served as Vice President for Policy at the Institute for Energy Research, overseeing its energy and climate policy work at the state and federal level. He also served as the director of the Natural Resources Task Force of the American Legislative Exchange Council, was a research fellow at the Mercatus Center and worked as professional staff on the Committee on Resources of the U.S. House of Representatives.

“We are honored to welcome Assistant Secretary Simmons to the ESA Storage Exchange,” stated Kelly Speakes-Backman, CEO of ESA. “The strategic goals of U.S. DOE’s EERE Office are well aligned with our industry’s vision of a more resilient, efficient, sustainable and affordable grid. We look forward to engaging with the Secretary to enable the widespread adoption of cost-effective energy storage that will support DOE EERE goals.”

The ESA Storage Exchange, a collaboration between ESA and the Electric Power Research Institute, focuses on sharing experiences of successful integration and deployment practices that lower costs, reduce emissions and establish a more reliable and resilient electric grid. An event unlike any other, the ESA Storage Exchange brings together stakeholders in an engaging environment of expert technical education and peer-to-peer idea exchange.
