Stitching Together the Grid of the Future

Autonomous Energy Grids is the name of a multifaceted project that the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has created to envision the electricity grid of the future, where output from many decentralized energy sources is managed simultaneously to ensure a secure and consistent energy supply. The concept is focused on smart technology and autonomous communication, based on a series of interconnected microgrids, which communicate with each other and make use of algorithms to continually find the best operating condition in response to constantly shifting energy demand, availability and pricing.

CEO Kelly Speakes-Backman's Statement on Announcement of Additional Tariffs on Chinese Lithium-ion Batteries

As expressed in its statement on June 11, 2019, the U.S. Energy Storage Association has deep concerns regarding the announcement of additional tariffs on Chinese lithium-ion batteries. We also reiterate that this will have an immediate and adverse economic effect on grid energy storage deployments in the United States. It could stymie projects already underway or cancel others altogether; threatening jobs and livelihoods.

Buckland Sets a Milestone for Rural Energy Capabilities with New Li-ion Battery

A few years ago, the village of Buckland in northwest Alaska set a milestone a leader in rural renewable energy when it got two turbines and three solar panels installed. Now, the village has hit an even more ambitious target: unofficially becoming the first village to power itself entirely off of renewable energy stored in recently installed lithium-ion batteries.

New Type of Electrolyte Could Enhance Supercapacitor Performance

Supercapacitors, electrical devices that store and release energy, need a layer of electrolyte — an electrically conductive material that can be solid, liquid, or somewhere in between. Now, researchers at MIT and several other institutions have developed a novel class of liquids that may open up new possibilities for improving the efficiency and stability of such devices while reducing their flammability.

Battery Storage Called Into Action As UK Suffers Country-Wide Power Cuts

Battery storage assets were called into action last week after the UK suffered country-wide power outages following a transmission system stress event. On August 9th, two large generators were disconnected from the UK’s power system almost simultaneously, effectively taking 2GW worth of electricity generation within minutes of each other. That collapse in generation sent the country’s transmission grid frequency to dip, so National Grid, the country’s electricity system operator, called on reserve and flexible generation capacity to respond, with many operators dispatching battery storage capacity to meet National Grid ESO’s calls.

Energy Storage Earns More Awards for KIUC

Kauai Island Utility Cooperative led the nation again in 2018 for interconnection of energy storage watts per customer, and ranked second in annual energy storage capacity, according to the Smart Electric Power Alliance. In 2018, KIUC posted more than 3,000 Wh/C, nearly six times more than the next ranked utility: Sterling Municipal Light Department in Massachusetts. This is the second year running that KIUC topped the list of storage watts per customer.

Texas Gives Public Power a Leg Up on Energy Storage

In a few weeks, municipal utilities and electric cooperatives in the state of Texas will have legal confirmation on their right to own energy storage facilities that sell energy or ancillary services, while not having to register as an energy generator. Current policy in the state defines energy storage as a generation asset, which requires owners to register as power generators.
